What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas
15th-Dec-2008 11:56 pm

End of year business, refinancing, the holidays and one last writing deadline is making life extremely busy. I probably won’t have much free time until January, but I wanted to share a little news.

Last week, Andrea and I flew to California. I had a few business meetings to attend, all of which went well. We enjoyed the moderate weather and a late night walk at the beach at the Montage in Laguna Beach. Saturday morning, we flew to Las Vegas and stayed over the night.

We stayed the night at the Bellagio. We enjoyed the buffet and the view of the fountain from the 28th floor. We played some slots, and I even played some poker. Above all else, we did what we went there to do. Around 7:45PM PST on the 13th of December 2008, we were married in a simple ceremony.

Our plans going forward are fairly simple. Right now we’re wrapping up a refinance of the house and car but very soon we will begin the process of moving to Canada. Over the winter, we’ll be cleaning out the house and packing up our belongings (mostly books). Much paperwork to be filed and lots of research to be done (since I’ll still be working for a US company but living in Canada, taxes will be more involved, I imagine). I’ll discuss the process in more detail as we go, because it’s interesting.

Off topic: when do you want to end the auction for the "Return to Luna" book?

I think the original auctions were meant to run to the 20th. My shipment of books is in the mail anyway, so I think I can end the auction within the next couple of days.

Heh, congratulations! Was it an Elvis wedding? :)

No way! We did see Elvis enter the building, though. We opted for a simple ceremony; just us, the minister and witness.

Congrats! Simple works the best likely, and where else but Vegas to get exactly that.

I'm interested in hearing how the taxes would work actually. I know working for a company in one state and living in another just means both states tax you. Would both countries tax you? Or are the Canadians nicer than that.

I never realized the dual taxation working for a company in another state. I'll have to pay more attention to my pay stub.

I know it's not uncommon for Canadians living in Windsor to work in Detroit. It can't be too complicated, I hope.

It depend on the states involved. Jedi worked for a university in Ohio, but was living in New York. Ohio took state taxes, and weren't going to give them back no matter the state he lived in. New York would have asked for state taxes that hadn't been paid. So, he "lived" in Ohio based on my and then past addresses until he graduated.

Hey, congrats on the marriage and the moving to Canada. I just had a friend move to Vancouver from Paris, of all places. Yes, there is paperwork.
